How to mix Fragrance Oils

Don’t worry if you do not know how to use fragrance oils, follow these steps we’ve made and you will be able to blend and use fragrance oils:

  1. Gather the materials: Before you start creating your Fragrance Oil blend, you’ll need to gather the materials you need. You’ll want an Oil Burner, a tealight, your chosen Fragrance Oils to mix, and water in which to dilute the oils. If you’re not sure what scents to blend, take a look at our suggestions below.
  2. Mix the Fragrance Oils: For the first step, prep the Oil Burner by adding water to the Oil Burner’s reservoir until it is two-thirds full – now it’s time to create your blend! Add a drop or two of each Fragrance Oil you’ve chosen to the water to make up your new fragrance mix. You may want to use more of some Fragrance Oils than others, depending on how strong you want that scent to be in the final blend. You may need to experiment a few times with different strengths until you’ve refined the mix to exactly right for you.
  3. Light the Oil Burner: Once you’re happy with the mix of Fragrance Oils, it’s time to light up the tealight candle and release the fragrance into the room. Take your tealight candle and insert it into the base of the Oil Burner, then light carefully. The heat from the candle rises up and triggers the release of the scent from your blend in the reservoir above. Sit back and enjoy your unique fragrance!
  4. Safety Tips: Please note that for safety, you should only use your Oil Burner on a heat resistant surface away from flammable materials and draughts and, before you make up your blend, double check your Oil Burner for cracks or chips. If you find any cracks or chips discontinue use of the Oil Burner.

Enjoy creating your own blends!

Now you know how to blend Fragrance Oils for use in an Oil Burner, you can enjoy creating your own unique recipes, experimenting with different blends and relaxing to a personalised scent. Once you’re done or if the water level becomes low, extinguish the candle to avoid damage to the Oil Burner. Allow the Oil Burner to cool completely before moving it or tidying it away.

As well as using Fragrance Oils with an Oil Burner, these versatile little oils can be used in other ways. Fragrance Oils can also be added to bowls of pot pourri to refresh the fragrance or sprinkled onto dried flowers to for a stylish and unusual fragrance solution. To blend your Fragrance Oils when using them in this way, just sprinkle one or two drops of each Fragrance Oil you’d like in the blend on to the pot pourri or the flowers.

Mixing Fragrance Oils

What fragrances go well together?

Although any of our Fragrance Oils can be mixed together into a whole host of weird and wonderful new combinations, it’s no secret that while some scents will blend beautifully together, others will clash with each other and result in a scent that’s less than ideal. To get a sense of Fragrance Oils that mix well together, it’s good to start by thinking about what kind of feeling you want to evoke with your blend and how each element will contribute to this.

For example, if you want a fresh, energising scent you might choose to blend the ozonic, sea salt scent of Sea Breeze with the zesty citrus of Lime & Basil as both will help add to the feeling you want to create in the home. However, adding a scent like Orange & Cinnamon to the mix would throw off your intended mood as this fragrance evokes a warming, cosy feeling that is at odds with the other two and the fresh, energising feeling you’re after.

Thinking about each scent’s Fragrance Family is a good guide to which fragrances evoke which mood and how they blend. The Fragrance Families are different categories which scents can be sorted into based on what type of fragrance they are.

The Fragrance Families

The first Fragrance Family is Fresh, these are clean, light, herbaceous or watery and airy fragrances. Adding Florals or Fruity fragrances helps bring sweetness to a Fresh scent, but avoid pairing with Spicy & Woody scents.

Fruity fragrances are scents which have dominant fruit notes or sweet notes like vanilla. Fruity scents mix well with Fresh and Floral fragrances, and with some Spicy & Woody scents for an interesting result. For example Vanilla added to sweeten Orange & Cinnamon creates a lovely gourmand scent and a drop of Sicilian Lemon gives a delightfully zesty boost to Oriental Spice.

Floral fragrances primarily evoke the scent of flowers. As there are many different types of flowers, there are a wide range of Floral fragrances. Those that are fresher and lighter, like Parma Violet mix well with Fresh fragrances. A richer or more herbaceous floral scent like Jasmine & Tuberose or Lavender can blend well with a Spicy & Woody scent like Sandalwood or Patchouli.

Spicy & Woody fragrances are rich, warm scents with prominent notes of spices and earthy woods. Spicy & Woody Fragrance Oils mix well together, with richer Fruity scents and exotic, heady or herbaceous Floral fragrances. In general, avoid blending Spicy & Woody scents with Fresh fragrances and fresh and light Floral fragrances.
