Refilling and reusing rather than relying on single-use products is one small change we can make in our lives to help lessen our impact on the environment and reduce the amount of waste we're getting rid of. At Ashleigh & Burwood, we're keen advocates of using refillable home fragrance. We offer refills for our Fragrance Lamps and our Reed Diffusers to keep them fragrancing your home for longer. Read on to discover how to refill home fragrance once it runs out, as well as how to reuse products that can't be refilled.

How to refill Fragrance Lamps

What is a Fragrance Lamp?

Fragrance Lamps are a method of fragrancing the home that uses a catalytic process to quickly diffuse fragrance throughout a space. There are two parts – the Fragrance Lamp, which diffuses the fragrance, and the Lamp Fragrance, the part which contains the scent that will be diffused. Lamps are inherently refillable and reusable, making them a great alternative to disposable home fragrance products.

Refilling a Fragrance Lamp

Safety first - you should only refill Fragrance Lamps once they've cooled from the previous use to avoid hurting yourself by handling hot components.

To refill your Lamp, start by emptying out any leftover Lamp Fragrance in the Lamp using the funnel (provided in the Lamp's box).

Next remove the wick and leave to air dry. You can skip this step if you're refilling with the same Lamp Fragrance you used before.

Using the funnel again, pour your new Lamp Fragrance into the Lamp until it's 2/3rds full.

Then leave the wick to prime for 30 minutes and follow the same instructions you do for every use of your Lamp.

How we're making our refill bottles more eco-friendly

One of the main goals of refillable products is to cut down on waste, especially plastic waste. Although our refill bottles are made from plastic due to the requirements of transporting fragranced liquids, to cut down on plastic waste you can opt for larger refill bottles. Every Lamp Fragrance comes in 500ml bottles and our most popular scents are available in 1 litre bottles. Choosing the 1 litre size in your favourite scents allows uses just one bottle instead of four 250ml bottles. Plus you'll save money on the price per millilitre!

All our refill bottles for Lamp Fragrances and Diffuser Refills are made with 30% recycled plastic and are widely recyclable. We are continually working on making further improvements to reduce the ecological impact of our products. As a result, 250ml and 500ml Lamp Fragrance bottles containing 30% Prevented Ocean Plastic will be introduced early this autumn. Prevented Ocean Plastic is recycled plastic that has been collected from coastal areas to reduce the risk of ocean plastic pollution. Ocean plastic pollution poses a serious threat to marine life, from ingestion of microplastics to animals becoming trapped in plastic debris, as well as further impacts on human health due to microplastics entering our water supplies and food chain.

How to refill Reed Diffusers

What is a Reed Diffuser?

Reed Diffusers are a simple, flame-free method of fragrancing the home. The reeds are placed into the glass diffuser vessel with one end in fragranced liquid, which is drawn up the reed to the other end. The fragrance then evaporates, scenting the air as it diffuses.

Diffuser vessels can be reused over and over thanks to Reed Diffuser Refills of fragranced liquid.

Refilling a Reed Diffuser

Reed Diffusers are super easy to use and similarly simple to refill.

First remove the old reeds from the diffuser and dispose of these. The reeds for our The Scented Home diffusers are made of wood, so are naturally biodegradable!

Next, carefully pour in the new fragrance liquid. You can use a funnel for this step if you have one on hand. It's best to do this step on a mat, as any drips of fragrance can stain polished surfaces like wood.

Lastly, add a new set of reeds to start drawing up the fragrance. The fragrance takes a few hours to reach the other end of the reeds and start diffusing into the air, so don't worry if it doesn't have a strong scent at first.

How to reuse Scented Candles

While you can’t refill our scented candles, you can reuse them! Just clean out the vessel once the candle is burned and put the vessel to good use.

To clean your vessel, fill it with just enough hot water to cover the remaining wax and leave for two minutes to allow the wax to soften. Hold the vessel near the top to avoid the hot wax and then pour the water away. Make sure you don't pour the wax down the sink as it can cause a blockage! If there's any remaining wax, scoop it up and throw away. Wipe any leftover residue with a thick kitchen towel and repeat steps until the vessel is clean. Finally, remove the metal wick holder from the bottom of the vessel.

The list of things you can put in a cleaned up candle vessel is truly endless. A perfect way to keep those gorgeous vessels around once you’re done burning them is to repurpose them as a beautiful storage solution for pens, makeup essentials or tea supplies.

Candle vessels are also a great way to house petite plants like cacti and succulents in style. You can simply sit the plant in its original plastic pot inside the candle vessel, hiding the boring brown pot. Alternatively, you can add some drainage stones to the bottom, then plant your plant directly into the vessel.

Lastly if you want to keep your candle burning bright, they can easily be repurposed as a tea light holder.
